As editor of emel, I was really pleased to be able to bring the story of "When Muslims Saved Jews" to the attention of the Muslim community to coincide with Holocaust Memorial 2010.

The cycle of submitting Annual Reports means it is published when it’s already out of date. So this report gives you a good snap-shot of May 2009 to the end of April 2010.

All over the world there is a struggle taking place within and about religion. Sometimes it results merely in harsh or prejudicial words. Too often it erupts in violence and acts of shocking extremism. The essence of the struggle is this: are people of religious faith prepared to regard those of a different faith with respect and dignity, and yes even, love; or do they rather regard them as enemies simply because they do not share the same faith or religion as them? Are they ‘open’ to the other or ‘closed’?

There is no religion worthy of the name that does not regard as one of its highest values the sanctity of human life. Islam is no exception to this rule. Indeed, God has made this unequivocal in the Quran by emphasizing the gravity of the universal prohibition against murder, saying of the one who takes even one life that “it is as if he has killed all mankind.” Islam views murder as both a crime punishable by law in this world and as major sin punishable in the Afterlife as well.
